San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA)

The SAMA is a major regional museum, one of only a few art museums in the United States to house such a collection. The SAMA is internationally recognized for its collection of Asian and Native American art and cutting-edge contemporary art exhibition. The museum was built between 1886 and 1888 and is one of the oldest art museums in the United States. The collection consists of around 18,000 works, including ancient Chinese bronzes and paintings, African artifacts, and modern art. The collection is a mix of donations from various sources, including private individuals, the City of San Antonio, and the State of Texas.

SAMA hosts over one hundred exhibitions a year, including traveling shows from around the world, and has been awarded a National Medal of Arts from the United States Congress and was named the second-best art museum in America by Time magazine in 2012. It was ranked the #1 art museum in the U.S. by TripAdvisor in 2014. In 2009, SAMA began the Riley Family Wing as a major gift from the Riley family. This wing houses a permanent collection of over 7,000 works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Salvador Dalí, Renoir, Andy Warhol, and others.

The main feature of the museum is the collection of works of art owned by the museum. SAMA houses one of the largest collections of paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and decorative arts in the Western United States. There are five galleries: Western Art, Islamic Art, Renaissance Art, Pre-Columbian Art, and European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. Each gallery has its own theme and exhibits a specific time period in world history. Visitors will also find numerous rotating exhibits that exhibit the work of local and national artists. The museum also offers tours, programs, and classes to teach the general public about art. Southtown is a part of town nearby.

This complex became the first location to house the San Antonio Museum of Art. The museum opened in 1981 and has since been designated as a Smithsonian affiliate.
