Wylie, Texas

 Wylie was founded in 1889 by R.E. Wylie, who wanted to create a town of his own, that would be closer to where he lived, and the location of the town. He had come to Dallas in 1884 and worked at the railroad, while he was learning to read, write, and do the math. The company that employed him was going bankrupt, so R.E. Wylie decided to go to the United States to start a business. He was hoping that he could make a fortune with his own business and return to Dallas. While on his journey, he came across a small town called Wylie, Texas.


Wylie was originally named after its founder, Robert E. Wylie. Robert E. Wylie was a man who wanted to start a company that would help people, especially farmers. He believed that the biggest problem facing the country was the bad weather and the hard winters. There were too many bad days when it was too cold to work on a farm. In 1889, Robert E. Wylie started a new company, that he hoped would create a town that was closer to where he lived. He was from Dallas, and he was worried about the possibility of the city being flooded during a major rainstorm.


R.E. Wylie saw that the town of Wylie had a lot of potential for growth. That's why he bought land, which was located in Dallas County. Then, he moved a large amount of money, that he had brought with him, into the small town and founded Wylie. His goal was to create a new city, that would be known for its business, education, and health. In order to accomplish this, he built a business center. He opened a bank, two hotels, and a post office. He also built an elementary school, a high school, and a hospital. He hired people to work for him, who could teach in public schools.

In Mentor, Ohio early settlers faced a lot of difficulties. The land was rugged and difficult to farm.
