There was a time when Wylie, Texas was called the “Onion Capital of the World.” The onion shed is still standing today. The building was constructed in the 1930s. It was made out of red brick and had a roof covered with corrugated tin. The building had a floor built out of concrete slabs. At that time, Wylie was still a small town. Wylie got its name because, in the early 1900s, the first onion crop was sold here. Wylie was known for its sweet onions. In the 1920s, the farmers grew more than 5,000 acres of onions.

Wylie became a city in 1937. In the 1920s, Wylie was considered to be the onion capital of the world. Many people came to Wylie to work in the onion sheds. The onion industry brought prosperity to the area. The farmers also started to plant other crops. After a while, onion farmers moved away and other farmers moved into the area. The last onion farmer left Wylie in the 1970s. Today, Wylie has a population of 1,500 people. The city was founded in 1874.
