Mentor, OH

Mentor's economy and population boomed in the 1940s and 1950s due to the automobile and World War II. At the end of the 1980s, there were about 25,000 residents in the city. However, in the 1990s, people started moving out of Mentor due to job losses. In the early 2000s, there were fewer than 15,000 people left. At that time, the city decided to become a more business-friendly place. The City Council has worked hard to keep the community beautiful, safe and to make it an excellent place to live. This led to the development of new businesses and homes. There is currently one main road and only one high school in the entire city

When Charles Parker founded Mentor, he wanted to develop a beautiful community with clean water and trees. He knew that he needed to develop a water supply for his residents. In 1802, he bought land near Mentor and started developing a town. He named the new settlement Mentor in honor of General John Mentor, who had been a good friend of the settlers at Fort Washington. He used the same name because it sounded good. This settlement developed slowly for several years. It wasn't until 1808 that the first post office was opened in Mentor. By 1821, this settlement had 1,000 residents. The community became a center for commerce. Many stores, churches, schools and other facilities were built.

Before the American Civil War, Mentor was the largest city in Ohio. It grew rapidly because of its proximity to Lake Erie. When the railroad arrived, it became even more popular. By 1880, the population had increased to about 16,000. In 1890, the first automobile came to the city. By 1920, the population had grown to about 30,000. After World War II, many workers moved into Mentor because of its favorable location. The local economy improved because of the new industry. By 1950, the population had grown to about 50,000. After the war, the growth of the city accelerated. In 1960, the population had grown to nearly 60,000.

A community of 1,000 people was quite a large settlement. By 1821, the community had reached this size. This is because settlers started arriving from all parts of America. People were attracted to Mentor because it had a good school system and a variety of businesses. The community was a good place to raise children. They learned how to farm and work with tools and machines. They worked hard in order to succeed in life. They became skilled workers and businessmen. Today, the city has grown considerably. In fact, it has over 100,000 residents. The city was once known as the "City of Homes." This is because the homes of many prominent people were located here. The population today has diversified as well.

When the Ohio Company wanted to buy land in America, they first bought land in Ohio. After settling in Pennsylvania, they moved westward across the Allegheny Mountains. In 1790, they purchased the present site of Mentor, Ohio. It took a while to develop Mentor because of the rough terrain and the difficulty of transportation. When Mentor was founded, it wasn't too far from other settlements. It took several years to establish this town because of the problems that the first settlers had. In 1803, the first post office was opened in this area. This is the date that the settlement was officially called Mentor.

Mentor had a population of about 1,000 people.
